This was a title sequence study for
The Consensus, a web series I was developing back in 2011. The storyworld of the series has machines that become sentient with human level sentience.
My idea was that we haven't created artificial intelligence yet because we haven't learned how to code emotions, desire and feelings into silicon. Until we do, what we could have is at most insect or animal level intelligence. The irony is that as humans, we can't think straight when we are overwhelmed by our emotions. May be feelings are the uranium-236 of our intelligence nuclear reactor. As long as the fission is under some form of control, it generates sentient power. But at certain times, a nuclear melt down rains fire and brimstone that consume the Sodom and Gomorrah of our sentience.
